If you’re a serious scheduler like me, the start of the summer months can feel strange when the intense school days are now in the past. Summer in Halifax brings many new activities, and there’s no better time to try them out! Here are some wellness activities to try and hopefully add to your routine.
Be in nature
Halifax is filled with beautiful green spaces and lots of access to the ocean. My favourites are walking distance from campus. The Halifax Public Gardens are filled with colour (and adorable ducks), and have great spaces for walking, reading, picnicking, and more!
If you want some adventure, I love Sir Sanford Fleming Park. It has great walking spaces, and you can climb the Dingle Tower to get amazing views of the Northwest Arm!
Point Pleasant Park is also a great walking space right by the water. It has many options for walking trails, and there’s a very high chance you’ll see a cute dog or even some squirrels.
Find a new hobby
Summer break is the perfect time to try out new hobbies! Some that my friends and I have tried are painting, crocheting, and running. I also love to get into reading during the summer months when I’ am not overwhelmed by required readings for my courses.
Another great resource to take advantage of is the Dalplex. Many students don’t realize that their membership also applies to the summer, and it offerss so many classes you can try! These include spin, yoga, H.I.I.T., and Pilates. Other spaces like the pool, badminton and squash courts, and the rock-climbing wall are fun to try out as well.
Try new healthy recipes
Nova Scotia has a lot of delicious local produce in the spring and summer months, like berries, greens, and more. If you’re into cooking or want to learn, it’s a great time to do it. I enjoy using Pinterest to find fun summer recipes and creating shopping lists for them. On Saturdays, check out the Halifax Brewery or Seaport Markets for an immersive Nova Scotian shopping experience!
