Dining hall hacks to spice up your meals

Dal's dining halls have so many great options, but sometimes you crave something different than what's on the set menu.

Food stations and tables and chairs in a room with a large vaulted ceiling and modern chandeliers hanging. Shirreff Hall's dining room has a bit of a Hogwart's vibe to go with the great food options.

Savory options

Breakfast burrito: A grab-and-go staple! Mix scrambled eggs, cheese, beans, and veggies (i.e. tomatoes, onions), then wrap in a tortilla (available upon request). Maybe add some hot sauce if you’re feeling ambitious!

DIY Lunchable: Feeling like a snack that’s really a full meal? To your plate, add your choice of veggies—like carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, or celery—and dip like ranch or hummus. Then choose a sandwich meat. Add cheese and crackers, and maybe some apple slices or a boiled egg.

Burrito bowl: A great lunch or dinner option! To a bowl, add beans, rice, veggies, proteins, and a sauce of your choice from the salad bar or sandwich station.

Buffalo chicken dip: Mix shredded chicken, cheese, cream cheese, buffalo sauce, and ranch. Add some veggies or tortilla chips for dipping!

Mediterranean bowl: Start with half of your plate filled with rice and the other with greens. Then add hummus and falafel. Next, add veggies of your choice, like red onion, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Add feta cheese and salad dressing to finish it off.

Tzatziki dip: To a bowl, add Greek yogurt, salt, oregano, lemon juice, chopped cucumber, and mix! Pair with tortilla chips or veggies.

Sweet options

Yogurt bowl: For a cold, sweet, and filling breakfast or snack, add greek yogurt to a bowl, and add toppings of your choice like granola, nuts, berries, banana, etc.

Caramel apple dip: To a bowl, add cream cheese and caramel sauce and combine. Smooth it out and add crushed Frosted Flakes on top for some crunch! Slice an apple to dip!

Affogato: Mix hot coffee, espresso, or hot chocolate with vanilla ice cream for a café-style dessert.

Shirley Temple: In a cup, add ice. Fill about halfway with sprite, then around a quarter with both orange juice and cranberry juice. A refreshing throwback!
