Halifax residences
Gerard Hall
Gerard Hall is one of two residences on Dalhousie’s Sexton Campus, where you can find Engineering and Architecture and Planning. The building houses mostly engineering and planning students due to its location, but students from all programs can live there!
It’s about a 15-minute walk from the main Studley campus, but living in Gerard is a great way to explore Halifax since it’s located in the downtown area, near shopping destinations like Spring Garden Road, plenty of restaurants, and steps from the beautiful waterfront! Gerard has single, double, and super single (large single), and loft double rooms.
Howe Hall
Howe Hall is Dalhousie’s largest residence, with six different houses: Bronson, Cameron, Fountain, Smith, and Studley. Located on Coburg Road, it’s near many campus buildings like the Killam Library, the Mona Campbell building, and the Life Sciences Centre (LSC), and has a large meal hall that all Dal students can access!
Howe has many different types of rooms in its houses, including single rooms, and various doubles, such as loft-style (high bed above desk), and bunk-style. There are also many communal spaces like games rooms and study spaces.
LeMarchant Place
LeMarchant Place (referred to by most students as LMP), is Dal’s newest residence building. It offers a step-up from the other residences due to its suite-style rooms. This building is usually recommended for upper-year students since it’s more like apartment living. It has single rooms which share a bathroom with another single, as well as two-, three-, and four-bedroom suites. These have their own bathroom, living area, and sink area, and some have fridges and microwaves.
LMP also shares its building with other student services, like the International Centre, Student Health and Wellness, the Welcome Centre, and the Admissions Office. Dal’s brand-new hockey rink, the Oulton-Stanish Centre, is also connected to LMP!
Risley Hall
Risley Hall is the distinct E-shaped residence building, just steps away from LeMarchant Place and the Student Union Building, and many other Studley Campus buildings. The E-shape separates it into three distinct sections. Risley also has its own dining hall, but it’s only open to students in Risley and LeMarchant Place due to its smaller size. However, these students can visit all other dining halls on campus.
A great feature of Risley is that every room has its own sink! The building features various room types, including single, regular double, and loft double.
Shirreff Hall
Shirreff Hall is Dalhousie’s oldest residence building, built in 1923. It has a very historic look with its stone interior, almost like a castle! The inside is also beautiful, with lots of dark wood and lofty ceilings. Some students refer to its dining hall as the Harry Potter dining hall because of its long, shared tables, high ceilings, and wooden beams. It’s open to all Dal students and is usually referred to as the best meal hall by students!
Shirreff has three houses: Newcombe, Old Eddy, and New Eddy. Newcombe has very spacious single rooms with large sink areas, as well as double rooms. Some areas of this house are restricted to female tenants only. Old and New Eddy are very similar despite their aging names. Both houses have single and double rooms.
Glengary Apartments
Many students don’t know that Dal has student apartments! Glengary Apartments is what we call a “non-traditional residence,” meaning there are no residence assistants (RAs) and a meal plan isn't required to live here. However, there is a Community Assistant (CAT) who lives in the building, should you need support.
It’s located right on Studley Campus on Edward Street, and contains single rooms with shared living spaces, kitchens, and bathrooms. Glengary is a great place to be if you’re looking for more independence while still having the comfort that residence provides.
Grad House
Also on the Sexton Campus, Dal has a residence for graduate students! Located in a beautiful historic building, Grad House offers single rooms for students looking to still have the comfort and security of residence life, while also sharing space with like-minded grad students. Since it’s a non-traditional residence, purchasing a meal plan is not required, but still an option for convenience!
Truro residences
All three of Truro’s residences are located right in the main ‘horseshoe’ of campus, near all your classes, labs, meal hall, the library, the farm, and the Langille Athletic Centre.
Chapman House
Chapman houses 125 students and has single, double, and super single (larger single) rooms. It’s usually known as the residence that houses mostly first-year students. There’s a fun community room in the basement with a TV, pool table, and other games. The building also has a kitchen for students to use.
Fraser House
Fraser houses 100 students and has options to live in single-gender or quiet communities. This means that some areas are restricted to male or female only, and others require reduced noise levels. Fraser also has a community room with games and a TV. The residence office is located in this building!
Trueman House
Trueman offers housing for undergraduate and graduate students, with the ground floor designated for graduate and mature students only. The rest of the building (floors 1–3), which houses undergraduate students, has single, double, and super single rooms. Trueman is also known to be the most accessible residence due to its ramp entrance. It has a student lounge combined with its lobby!
